Sony VAIO

Sony is an extremely well-known brand in all corners of the world, and is very well positioned in consumer markets in the areas of entertainment, communications, and games (PlayStation 3).

Sony’s VAIO PC business has grown substantially in Europe, the USA, and Asia Pacific during 2006 and 2007. Sony is currently forecasting unit sales of 5 million PCs for 2007, up 25% on 2006 actual shipments.

A Consumer Products Group within Sony’s Electronics business is responsible for central management of related products including televisions, digital cameras, video cameras and PCs, to strengthen product appeal and promote better linking of products.

Synergies are beginning to emerge, both from a marketing and a new product perspective. Sony’s principal battleground in this initiative is the home - specifically the living room, which is Sony’s natural territory.

A prime example of Sony leveraging its strength in home entertainment is the introduction of the new Sony VAIO VGX-TP1 Living Room PC, a stylish (and circular) personal computer with strong integration features with Sonys' entertainment and photography products which Bill Gates demonstrated in his keynote at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2008.

Sony’s CEO has identified Apple and Microsoft as key competitors over the next two years.
