About us

Our Purpose

The main objective of Software Self Sufficiency is to share information that lets people take control of their computers and - if you are a developer - get access to information on specific software and web development topics. We also have a few fun things on the site - like our Halo 3 store!

Most of the things you would want to know are already on the web of course. But, there is a big problem - the information is all over the place. We're trying to pull the most useful ideas together for you.

We are not writing for geeks, though some of these good people may find parts of this site useful - particularly our online book and software store. Nor are we writing for devotees of technology blogs, or people who like ranting about particular software and computer companies.

We want to help ordinary people who just want to do useful things with their computer, and happen to need a bit of advice or need to know where to find some useful information.

Who We Are & Our Contact Details

Software Self-Sufficiency is written by professionals who have worked at the leading companies in the IT and Software industry for over 20 years, including in some of the world's largest R&D centres.

If you are not that old yet, please believe that being at the cutting edge for that long means you might actually know something about technology, and can stay current. The human brain never actually fills up!

Peace of Mind - Online Shopping through Amazon.com

Bluntly put - you may not have heard of us, so you will want to know why you should trust making a purchase through our store.

The Software Self Sufficiency Online Store is operated in partnership with Amazon.com . We assemble the catalogue of items, sort them into meaningful categories for you to browse through, etc, but when you order a product you enter the familiar and widely-trusted Amazon.com order processing, checkout, and fulfillment system.

We think this is the best way to operate, for you and for us. Since Amazon is the world expert in these things we see no need to "re-invent the wheel".

Why Bother with Your Online Store - Shouldn't I just go to Amazon.com ?

Well, of course you could. But we think we have made it easier to shop on Amazon - because we know the subject area we have indexed everything so books on specialist topics are easier to find - especially if you don't know exactly what you are looking for.

In terms of prices, it would not make any difference. We charge exactly the same prices as on www.amazon.com. This also includes discounts - if you see an item discounted on Amazon, it will be the same discounted price on SoftwareSelfSufficiency.com .

Our partnership with Amazon provides us with the same useful tools you will find on the main Amazon.com site: reader reviews of software, books, and other products; "star ratings" for each product (voted by readers); suggestions on other items similar to what you are looking at; full book author & publisher detail; synopses; and the marvelous Amazon feature of being able to open up and read sections of many popular books (just like you could in a walk-in book store).

Also, if an item is available on Amazon.com, it is available through us. This means that SoftwareSelfSufficiency.com gives you access to the world's largest catalogue of books, software and other products. No walk-in store can offer you a range like this.

What you Don't Get on Amazon.com

While Amazon is a fantastic online resource, the very size of the operation means that you don't always get the best experience if you don't know quite what you're looking for. They are a generalist store, and the structure of the Amazon website and indexes cannot be the best in all circumstances.

We know our stuff and have structured the Software Self Sufficiency online store to be very helpful and informative to people interested in software, technology, and web development.

Shipping Charges

You will pay shipping charges (calculated by Amazon) in addition to the price of the products you buy through www.SoftwareSelfSufficiency.com. We have quite a lot of customers who will be interested in shipping charges to Australia.

If you are comparing prices on this store versus buying locally, remember the "hidden costs" you will probably incur.

These may include cost of getting to/from the physical store, the time you will spend, the risk that you may not be able to find the item you are looking for, or inadvertently purchase out-of date editions (many bookstores find it difficult to sell their stock of specialist titles before new editions come out).

Finally, remember that the more items you buy, the lower the shipping cost "overhead" on each item.

Why should I trust you with my Credit Card details?

You won't. We don't need to see any specific information about you. You never give them to us. We don't collect, see, or keep any financial or credit card details about you when you buy through www.SoftwareSelfSufficiency.com .

We never see or collect any credit card or banking details from you. The shopping cart and checkout you will go through are Amazon's main systems (you are buying the products from Amazon - we are really just helping you find what you want to buy). Amazon.com have invested a huge amount of money and effort in the security of transactions made through their shopping cart and checkout facilities.
